The film tells the story of a fictional teen band The Wonders , a one-hit wonder from the 1960s. That Thing You Do! is the hit of this band.

Single release and chart success

That Thing You Do! was released as a single in 1996. The performers were The Wonders , the group from the film. It was released by the Play-Tone label , which was founded for this (and for the release of the soundtrack) by Tom Hanks , the director of the film, and Gary Goetzman , one of the producers of the film. So the name of the label could be taken from the film.

The single entered the US charts on October 12, 1996, stayed there for 15 weeks and reached number 41. The song entered the UK charts on February 22, 1997, stayed there for three weeks and reached number 22 On February 17, 1997 it hit the German charts for four weeks and reached number 90.

Awards

That Thing You Do! was nominated in 1997 for the Oscar and the Golden Globe , and in 1996 for the Satellite Award , each in the category of best film song . The song was also nominated for the OFTA Award in the category Best Original Song in 1996 . Each of these awards went to You Must Love Me from the film Evita . In 1996 That Thing You Do! the Florida Film Critics Circle (FFCC) Award for Best Song .
