The Auteurs were a British rock band that existed from 1992 to 1999. Her music was laid out between the popular styles of Britpops and American alternative rock , which were popular in the early 1990s , but also had echoes of the glam rock of the 1970s. Despite many positive reviews, the Auteurs have never been granted great success.

biography

Ex-front man Luke Haines (2005)

The songwriter Luke Haines (* 1967) played in various bands in his school days and was a member of the band The Servants (1985-1991), which released two commercially unsuccessful albums at college . After the group split, he formed The Auteurs with his girlfriend Alice Readman, who had also played on The Servants, and James Banbury in 1993. The group was repeatedly accompanied by other musicians on their records.

The first single Showgirl go received high praise from the press, especially the Melody Maker . Therefore, it was possible to sign a record deal with Hut Records. The album New Wave was nominated for the 1994 Mercury Music Prize , but the prize went to Suede and her album of the same name. The group's music was associated with the successful Britpop movement, which Haines disliked; he subsequently allowed himself to be carried away with disparaging statements about colleagues.

In 1995, the critically acclaimed successor Now I'm a Cowboy was released . The record opens with the song Lenny Valentino , which a number of critics consider Haines' best song. The Auteurs vs µ-Ziq , a remix album from the autumn of the same year, clearly showed the demarcation from the Britpop movement.

The 1996 album After Murder Park is considered the most popular among fans. Producer Steve Albini created a more catchy sound that gave lyrical lyrics expressiveness on songs like Land Lovers , Unsolved Child Murder and Buddha .

After the remix album with µ-ziq and After Murder Park , Haines said in an interview in 1996 that he found worthless Belgian techno more interesting than the pop music of the late 1990s and that the concept of the rock band was out of date for him; he cites The Smashing Pumpkins and Oasis as examples .

After Haines on his project to Baader Meinhof , named after the RAF - terrorists Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof concentrated, it took until 1999 before with How I Learned to Love the Boot Boys should see the next and final Auteurs album. As a result, Haines increasingly relied on electronic sound, which put off many older fans.

Haines founded the respected art pop band Black Box Recorder and repeatedly started individual projects that failed. James Banbury founded the Infantjoy group with Paul Morley , but this was no longer successful.
