The Braids was an American dance-pop duo consisting of Zoë Ellis and Caitlin Cornwell. It became famous in 1996 through a cover version of Freddie Mercury's song Bohemian Rhapsody .

The duo should not be confused with the Canadian art rock band Braids, which was founded in 2006 .

history

The two singers Zoë Ellis and Caitlin Cornwell are from Berkeley , California. They met as children when they sang in the same gospel choir. In 1993 they became members of the funk band Mo'Fessionals, which performed in clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area and released two albums ( Who Likes The Bass? - Live At Slim’s , Finally Over ).

In 1996 they recorded an R&B cover of Bohemian Rhapsody with producer Stephan Jenkins , which appeared both as a single and on the soundtrack for High School High and other compilations. With the song, the two singers were able to place themselves in numerous charts under the name The Braids. They reached number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 21 on the UK charts and the top 10 in Belgium, Sweden, Norway and New Zealand.

The Braids, who had signed a contract with Atlantic Records , were planning a studio album afterwards. Since Jenkins was busy with the simultaneous success of his band Third Eye Blind , the debut album Here We Come was not released until 1998. Two singles were also released. The Braids could not build on their chart success.

Zoë Ellis and Caitlin Cornwell then brought out no more publications as The Braids, but continued to work together as background singers. Zoë Ellis began a solo career in 2001, working with her brother, jazz saxophonist Dave Ellis. Caitlin Cornwell was a member of the SoVoSo and Bop City Pacific groups, among others.
