The Cardinall's Musick is a British vocal ensemble of nine people, specializing in music from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as modern music.

history

The Cardinall's Musick was founded in 1989 by musicologists David Skinner and Andrew Carwood , Cambridge graduates and then music director of St Paul's Cathedral . The ensemble of nine singers is named after the English Cardinal and Lord Chancellor Thomas Wolsey and is dedicated to the interpretation of early music of the English Renaissance and composers of the time such as William Byrd , Robert Fayrfax and Thomas Tallis . Initially founded as an a cappella formation , the group now has its own orchestra of historical instruments . The Cardinall's Musick received positive feedback from the press for its historically informed performance practice . She is also credited with the ability within a group to seek less the traditional fading in of the individual voices into the ensemble than to maintain the solo personality of the individual voices and to merge them with one another. This merging (for example, until all nine singers intone the O Maria Deo Gratia by Fayrfax) and the special effect it creates is praised.

From contemporary music, The Cardinall's Musick has given world premieres of works by the composers Michael Finnissy , Matthew Martin , Judith Weir and Simon Whalley . The group received the Gramophone Award for Early Music four times. The last episode of their complete recording of William Byrd's Latin works, entitled Infelix Ego , also won a Gramophone Award in the Recording Of The Year category in 2010 , making it the second album of early music to have won this award to date. Internationally, the ensemble has won the Diapason d'or , the German Record Critics' Prize and Echo Klassik .

The ensemble performed a. a. at the Spitalfields Music , Bath International Music Festival , MBNA Chester Music Festival , Aldeburgh Festival , Three Choirs Festival and The BBC Proms .

In 2011 the British music magazine Gramophone selected The Cardinall's Musick as one of the "20 Greatest Choirs in the World".
