The Carolina Tar Heels were an American old-time band from the 1920s and early 1930s. They should not with the Carolina Tarheels from Atlanta , Georgia , are confused, which reached in the early 1930s by the radio awareness.
Career
The band was founded by Doc Walsh and Gwen Foster. Garley Foster (the latter were not related) and Clarence Ashley joined the two musicians in 1928. The Carolina Tar Heels were extremely famous in their Piedmont area. From the mid-1920s they made numerous records for RCA Victor . Some of their popular titles are Her Name Was Hula Lu , Bring Me A Leaf From The Sea, and Shanghai in China . Her biggest hit, however, was My Home's Across the Blue Ridge Mountains . In the 1930s there was another band around Hoke Rice , also called Carolina Tarheels . To differentiate themselves from the group, they renamed themselves The Original Carolina Tar Heels . However, the band split up afterwards.
In 1961 the former band members got together again due to the great popularity of the folk . Together with Walsh's son Drake, they recorded an album in 1964 for the Folk Legacy label .
