The The Dell at Milton Road in Southampton , the home of the English football club was 1898-2001 Southampton FC .

history

On September 3, 1898, the football stadium was opened with the opening game against Brighton United . The game ended 4-1 for Southampton. The stadium was built by George Thomas for around £ 10,000  . In 1929 The Dell was expanded and the capacity increased to about 30,000 seats. The reason for this expansion was a fire in the east stand that was triggered by a cigarette.

The last game at the venue was on 19 May 2001 between Southampton FC and Arsenal FC (3-2) and the stadium was demolished that same year. Today there is a residential complex on the property. Southampton FC has played its home games at St. Mary's Stadium since then .
