Edel von Rothe (born April 27, 1925 in Berlin , † November 19, 2008 in Düsseldorf ) was a German ballet dancer .

Career

On July 29, 1941, von Rothe passed her matriculation examination for stage dance at the Reichstheaterkammer in Berlin. She was trained by Tatjana Gsovsky at the school on Fasanenstrasse. Until 1950 she performed with the ensemble of the German State Opera in the rooms of the Admiralspalast in numerous choreographies by Tatjana Gsovsky. Her colleagues included well-known soloists such as Michael Piel , Gert Reinholm , Peter van Dyk , Eleonore Vesco , Natascha Trofimova and Gisela Deege . At the same time there were many appearances in the Friedrichstadtpalast and other venues. Most of them were dance and revue numbers that were embedded in the variety shows - a practice that many dancers followed at the time.

In 1950 the Hamburg Ballet Theater Company was founded to tour Europe with the Abraxas Ballet . The choreographer was Helge Peters-Pawlinin. Von Rothe embodied the Archisposa. In the 1950/51 season she was the solo dancer of the ballet ensemble in the Deutsches Theater Göttingen , ballet master: Hans von Kusserow , where she a. a. who danced Carmen in a widely acclaimed ballet version of the opera. Afterwards she became prima ballerina in the Düsseldorf Opera House under Yvonne Georgi . Von Rothe stayed in Düsseldorf , where Kurt Jooss , Otto Krüger (choreographer), Nika Nilanowa-Sanftleben and Werner Ulbrich followed Georgi. With Werner Ulbrich she had great success in his choreography of Henze's Undine .

With the change of general manager Grischa Barfuss at the beginning of the 1964 season and the assumption of office by ballet director Erich Walter , she initially withdrew to character roles such as the mother in Cinderella , gypsies in Petrushka or the queen in Pelleas and Melisande . During this time she became his closest collaborator alongside Růžena Mazalová (* 1927; † 2019 in Prague) - Walter's co-director. Many young choreographers benefited from her long experience and supported them with empathy. This included names such as Hans van Manen, Uwe Scholz , Gerd Bienert and Istvan Herczog. After Erich Walter's death on November 23, 1983, she remained at the side of Paolo Bortoluzzi, who was ballet director at the Rhine Opera until 1991.

However , she thankfully refused Heinz Spoerli's wish to continue working in his first season in 1991/92. With a few appearances as mother in Spoerlis Nutcracker , she finally said goodbye to the stage. In 1977 she was made an honorary member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein .

Private life

In the 1950s she was married to the director Günter Roth for some time . She lived with her sister in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel until her death .
