The Disintegration Loops is a concept album by the American sound artist William Basinski and was released in 2002 on his label 2062 Records . It is the first of a total of four parts in The Disintegration Loops series . Parts II to IV followed in 2003. In 2012, all four parts were remastered and re-released as a box set.

History of origin

The recordings were made during attempts to save magnetic tape recordings from 1982 by digitizing them in summer and autumn 2001 from decay. Due to wear and tear, the ferrites loosened during playback (the magnetic layer on the tapes fell apart). Basinski says he finished the project on the morning of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and then sat on his roof with friends and listened to the recordings throughout the day while the towers in front of them collapsed.

The entire album (as well as the other parts of the series) consists of two loops, which gradually become more and more indistinct and acoustically fall into one another.

reception

The online music magazine Pitchfork Media selected The Disintegration Loops at number 30 on the list of the 50 best albums of 2004 and number 194 on the list of the 200 best albums of the 2000s. In addition, The Disintegration Loops I – IV took third place in the selection of the 50 best ambient albums of all time. In the album's original review, the album received a (unusually for ambient albums) high rating of 9.4 out of 10. The new release in 2012 as a box set even received the highest rating.

The online music magazine for electronic independents Resident Advisor ranks the album at number 86 of the 100 best albums of the decade, the website Tiny Mix Tapes at number 10 of the 100 best albums of the decade.
