The English Game is a British miniseries by video-on-demand provider Netflix . The series is about the beginnings of the development of modern football in Great Britain. The series was released on Netflix on March 20, 2020.

The series covers the transformation of football from a sport for the upper class to a game for the masses. Football becomes the arena for the class struggle. Arthur Kinnaird as captain of the Old Etonians against Fergus Suter with his working-class legs Darwen FC and Blackburn FC.
Historical background
Fergus "Fergie" Suter and James "Jimmy" Love joined Darwen separately. Suter was a stonemason, not a mill worker. Jimmy Love did not join Darwen as a paid player, but in fact fled his Glasgow home after a debt arrest warrant was issued against him. He ended his football career in 1880 when he was recruited for the Royal Marines. Three years later he died of intestinal fever while stationed in Egypt.
