The film was released in 1980 both in IMAX format and as a 35 mm film in cinemas and was thus able to combine current interest with the still new, huge image format. The film's narrator was Robert Foxworth .

Photographs were taken by amateur photographer Gary Rosenquist , among others . In addition to photo and film recordings, animations and trick effects were also used. These were made by Sean MacLeod Phillips and William Powlowski.
