The Fall: Last Days of Gaia is a computer role-playing game released on November 19, 2004 by the Berlin development studio Silver Style Entertainment . The game is distributed by Koch Media . The game combines elements of the real-time strategy game with those of the computer role-playing game.

action

The game describes a typical end time / dark future scenario (comparable to Mad Max or Waterworld ). On October 2, 2062, terrorists seized the power of terraforming devices that were intended for colonization on Mars and put them into operation. The earth warms up uncontrollably and desert landscapes emerge. The real game begins 21 years later - the protagonist (either male or female) joins the GNO as a mercenary. For these there are jobs to be done. In the first half of the game you will mainly fight against the Ratskulls and other gangs. Later in the game there are sometimes radical changes in the story - the protagonist doubts his mission, betrayal and intrigue come to light. The protagonist can find his missing sister in the shadows and free them. Finally, in association with the shadows, the GNO must be fought and the biosphere liberated.

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to that of the Soldiers of Anarchy game published by the same developer . In a three-dimensional environment, the player can control up to six characters. These can be equipped with armor, weapons and other items and, in addition to fighting, carry out other actions with or on objects in the vicinity. Objects are typically looted or found and can be exchanged for others at dealers. If a character has certain skills, he can also combine or modify objects with each other. In addition to useful items such as tools, food and medical equipment, objects without any function can also be found. The few vehicles available are not armed and are only used for transport.

The player characters have certain characteristics and skills. Both defeating opponents and solving missions yield experience. In this way, the characteristics and skills can be improved and new skills can be learned. In addition, the characters also have certain peculiarities, which become noticeable through occasional discussions among themselves, but in rare cases even block abilities. Only the protagonist is able to interact with non-player characters. Different answers are offered as alternatives, the choice of which can influence the course of the game considerably.

The environment is subject to a daily routine in which the lighting conditions change. In addition, the game environment was given a certain life of its own. During the day, the non-player characters have typical activities. The individual people, their interests and the stories that connect with each other are sometimes presented in great detail and in a humorous way.

The game world is divided into different areas and can be entered freely, each area can be visited as often as you like. Interactions with non-player characters or found objects add additional accessible locations. A certain sequence for the solution of orders essentially only exists insofar as these are decisive for the main action. A few orders are subject to a time limit or can only be fulfilled when entering the respective area for the first time. Different approaches can often be followed to solve the problem. Sometimes violence, special abilities of a character, a sophisticated strategy or finding a substitute object can all lead to the same problem being dealt with.

Terms, groups and people

biosphere

This habitat , closed off from the outside world, was created in the course of the project to colonize Mars, but remained unfinished. The Government of the New Order (GNO) and the Shadows are fighting over ownership of this facility. Both groups would be able to complete the plant and put it into operation. In the introduction to the game it becomes clear that the biosphere will ultimately be operated and protected by a "new" GNO .

Desert Monks

Members of this group live in spiritual contemplation in the Outlands and defend themselves from all influences by sewing up an eye, mouth and ears. They also defend themselves all attempts at contact by letting their weapons do the talking.

enclave

This term is used to describe the settlements consisting of just a few buildings, which are located in the otherwise deserted wasteland.

GNO

The Government of the New Order was founded by President Hayes as a regulatory authority. The main task is to protect the population from attacks by gangs. Since their own soldiers are not enough, the GNO uses mercenaries like the protagonists of the game. The soldiers of the GNO wear NVA uniforms .

President Hayes

As a former advertising manager, Hayes has mastered the manipulation of others. Accordingly, he adjusts his measures not to the legal system, but to the effect of the public. As a deterrent, he has captured gang members beheaded with a guillotine that he had brought from a museum .

Wesley

Wesley comes from the same village as the protagonist, but has previously joined the GNO and is responsible for the recruitment of mercenaries there. Wesley is later exposed as a traitor.

Ratskulls

The members of the Ratskulls all wear black leather jackets with back patches. The gang is armed essentially only with pistols, a few submachine guns and shotguns, but this is completely sufficient for raids on villages and enclaves. This gang maintains an arms depot and produces large quantities of drugs to keep the growing number of members compliant. The protagonist's hometown was also ravaged by the Ratskulls, so the Ratskulls consider the Ratskulls responsible for the death of his father and the kidnapping of his sister.

shadow

As part of the Mars project, but also as a reaction to global warming after the great collapse, the government carried out some genetic experiments which resulted in genetically modified people 2.50 m tall and extremely pigmented skin. The modified people survived in the changed environment and formed their own group. Some of the shadows are hostile to all unmodified humans, but the greater part strives to coexist.

Seeker

Wherever an attack by another gang or a natural disaster has taken place, a visit to the Seeker follows. They are looking for something that can be used in the remains of the submerged settlement. Usually the seekers do not stay in the settlement, but prefer an outdoor storage area.

Wastelands

The desert-like wastelands between the small colonizable areas are known as wasteland. In the game, these areas are crossed automatically and cannot be entered.

Development history

In the course of development, Silver Style Entertainment hired designers Damien Folletto and Jeff Husges, former employees of the now closed role-playing game developer Black Isle Studios , who had last worked on the post-apocalyptic role-playing game project Van Buren ( Fallout 3 ).

The release was in November 2004 and was marked by a large number of bugs in the game that caused displeasure among critics and gamers. Most of these issues have been addressed in a few subsequent patches. With the Extended Version released in April 2005 , all dialogues have been completely revised, with better sound quality - the download is 1.1 GB and free for owners of the original game. After the extended version , Silver Style began to work on an add-on , which will start two years after the events of the original game. A second part was also announced, but both projects remained unfinished.

On July 31, 2006 a Reloaded Version was published, which corresponds to the last version improved by bug fixes and additionally contains new textures and some more quests.

An announced English language version was never published. However, there is an unofficial patch that replaces all written texts in a German version of the game with an English translation from the fan community.

reception

At the time of publication, the game corresponded to the current state of affairs - i.e. the average. The trade press quickly criticized the extreme number of errors (bugs) that made the game almost unplayable in the first versions, as well as the poor sound quality of the voice output. In the Extended Version released in April 2005 (now included in the purchase version), all dialogues have been completely revised and have a better sound quality - the download is 1.1 GB and free for owners of the original game.

The Fall: Mutant City

The Fall: Mutant City is a point-and-click adventure from German developer Silver Style Entertainment . It is an offshoot of The Fall: Last Days of Gaia and was released for Windows on November 28, 2011 .

description

The Fall: Mutant City is, according to the manufacturer, the continuation of the role-playing game. The character reaches a city that has been taken over by mutants. Since the protagonist is ill, he looks for a way into the city, which is regularly denied him by the new rulers. He receives support from a man named Henry Leicester, who offers him treatment in exchange for support against the mutants.

reception

The game magazine GameStar described the game as “immensely overpriced” and “right on the verge of sham packaging” because it was marketed with misleading advertising and the length of one and a half hours of play was clearly too low for the purchase price. Tester Jochen Gebauer therefore gave it a fun game rating of 49%.

GBase and Adventure Corner also shared this criticism and gave 4.5 out of 10 and 39%, respectively.
