The series was produced by the US streaming provider Hulu and the British television broadcaster Channel 4 .
Sean Penn plays former NASA astronaut Tom Hagerty, who takes part in the Mars colonization mission. It will be Penn's first leading role in a television series. Actress LisaGay Hamilton took on the role of Kayla Price. Natascha McElhone plays Laz Ingram.
A first trailer was presented at the end of July 2018.

“ The First is not what many would expect from the series. Instead of an exciting science fiction adventure, the chief author Willimon often only serves us greasy family drama over long phases of this first season. It is less about the challenges of the journey to Mars itself, but more about the inner conflicts of the travelers, which are not even presented in a particularly comprehensible manner. "
