The Fisherman's Friends are a shanty choir from the village of Port Isaac in Cornwall . The film of the same name from 2019 traces their history.

history

In the mid-1990s, a few locals got together in Port Isaac, on the Cornish coast , to sing sea shanties together in the harbor of the fishing village. This became a tradition and the singing performances on Fridays during the summer months became a local attraction. The choir also recorded two CDs that they distributed themselves.

In the 2000s, the village became known, among other things, as the location for the series Doc Martin , and a producer of the Universal label became aware of the choir while on vacation. At the beginning of 2010 the group of ten, whose members were all over 50 years old, was offered a record deal and recorded an album of a cappella shanties.

The Fisherman's Friends album proved to be very successful and entered the top 10 of the UK album charts in April 2010. It sold more than 150,000 copies and was awarded gold . In addition to nationwide concerts, including in the Royal Albert Hall , there were also festival appearances in the summer, such as in Glastonbury .

On February 9, 2013, there was a serious accident involving a metal door while performing in Guildford . Singer Trevor Grills and tour manager Paul McMullen died. After that, the group suspended all performances for a year. Nevertheless, a second album was released in autumn 2013, entitled One and All , which was dedicated to the two deceased. It came to number 29 on the UK charts.
