The God Thing is the second studio album by the German progressive metal band Vanden Plas . It was released by InsideOut Music in 1997 .

Creation and publication

The album was recorded in 1997 in Schöneck and Pirmasens and mixed by Robert Kohlmeyer. P. Achim Schneider ( cello ) and Gunni Mahlig ( violin ) were involved as guest musicians . Photos of a sculpture by Cesare Marcotto were used for the artwork . After InsideOut Music in 1996 already the acoustic cover - EP AcCult had published, also appeared The God Thing at the Klever label. In France, the album was released with a French-language version of a title from the debut album Color Temple , and a limited edition with bonus CD was produced for Fnac . InsideOut Music reissued the album in 2004 with an expanded booklet and bonus tracks.

Vanden Plas play progressive metal on The God Thing with hard riffs , emotional vocals and complex structures. There are melodious, virtuoso, hypnotic and bulky passages.

reception

The album was positively received by the press. Henning Mangold from the Babyblauen Seiten does perceive an unpleasant dream theater influence , but emphasizes the "technical refinements" of the "leaden epic". Stefan Glas from Rock Hard praises the “mixture of powerful guitars and mystical melodies” and sums it up: “Almost an hour has passed and no failure had to be registered. The plate presents itself as if it were made from one piece ”. The eclipsed magazine picked The God Thing in its list on the prog metal milestones.
