After seeing a concert by the Fugs , they decided to start their own band. Kessler persuaded Jay Dillon (vocals, autoharp ), the art director of ESP-Disk, to take part in the project. They called themselves "The Godz," and Stollman gave them two hours of studio time in September 1966 to record a single. By the end, they'd spent six hours in the studio, recording material for an entire album that eventually came out as Contact High .

After the second album Godz 2 Dillon left the band. The remaining trio recorded The Third Testament . After that, the musicians went their separate ways. However, when Lester Bangs published a positive review of Godz in the music magazine Creem in 1971 , the reunification and further albums took place.
