The Horde

The Horde is a strategy game that was released for the 3DO in 1994 . The game was also released for MS-DOS and the Sega Saturn . The game's soundtrack came from Burke Trieschmann and won a Computer Gaming Worlds Premiere Award for Best Musical Score in 1994. The plot of the game is told in the console versions with FMV scenes , the MS-DOS version tells the story only in pictures.

Kirk Cameron took on the role of Sir Chauncey.

Chauncey is an orphan who was raised by good-natured cows and now works as a servant for King Winthrop. During a feast, the king threatens to choke on his meal and Chauncey saves his life with a Heimlich move . Out of sheer gratitude for this he was appointed knight and defender of the royal lands. With the sword of the king he is supposed to put an end to the Hordlings , who are terrifying the kingdom. This knight does not fit into the concept of the malicious chancellor Kronus Maelor, who has been manipulating the king for a long time.

Gameplay

The player takes control of Sir Chauncey, who first has to equip the villages with cows, weapons and fighters. There are also sidequests that allow the player to get new money. In the second step, Sir Chauncey has to face the Hordlings and destroy them. Here Chauncey moves through the area and kills the attackers together with his fighters, whereby his fighters remain in their traditional place. The red Horlings try to destroy the houses of the respective village and to eat their inhabitants. If Chauncey manages to fend off the attackers, he can continue - if he fails, he is punished by the King's Chancellor and the game is lost.

After four seasons, Sir Chauncey has to pay taxes to the Chancellor. Should he not be able to pay them, he will also be punished by the Chancellor. In addition, the player has the opportunity to buy new weapons and fighters in a shop.

Characters

Sir Chauncey portrayed by Kirk Cameron : Sir Chauncey is an orphan who was raised by good-natured cows. He originally worked as a servant to the king and was later knighted. He is a clumsy person who, especially with a lot of luck, can escape several attacks by the Chancellor.

King Winthrop portrayed by Michael McCarty : He's actually a good character who values ​​Sir Chauncey very much and doesn't want to lose him. However, being so influenced by its evil chancellor that Sir Chauncey incurs several disadvantages. Nevertheless, he supports Chauncey with gifts of money or a tax exemption. He is the ruler of the Franzpowanki Kingdom .

Chancellor Kronus Maelor portrayed by Michael Gregory : The evil Chancellor Kronus Maelor is interested in money and power. He loves to. Torturing people and trying to get Sir Chauncey out of the way with the help of the Hordlings and some assassination attempts. If this doesn't work, he makes Chauncey's life difficult by raising taxes for flimsy reasons.

FNN Newscaster Portrayed by Henry Crowell Jr .: He is the Kingdom's news anchor . He reports on current sports results or missing tax officials, which can result in no taxes being collected. He also works as a herald and as the chancellor's favorite sacrifice.

The Hordlings : They try to destroy the king's villages and are characterized by their red skin and sharp claws. There are the most varied forms of hordlings who appear as opponents.

Background information

The FMV scenes were directed by MacKenzie Waggaman and Robert Weaver. The map of the fictional kingdom of Franzpowanki was drawn by Iain McCaig. The Japanese game magazine Famitsu awarded the 3DO version of the game 30 out of 40 possible points.
