The teenagers June and Harry run away from home together. They quickly realize that they are being followed. June finds out that she is a shapeshifter when she surprisingly transforms into her pursuer Steinar and only regains her own appearance after a few hours. June and Harry flee to London.
June's mother, who left her family years ago, is also a shapeshifter. She lives in a colony owned by the scientist Halvorson, where he researches and looks after shapeshifters. Halvorson has also set Steinar on June to bring her to the colony.
