The Lucky Ones is the title of a song by the Estonian artist Kerli . It was released on their second EP Utopia (2013).

background

In 2012, Kerli started working on songs for their third album with the Swedish production team SeventyEight, consisting of Svante Clas Halldin and Jakob Gustav Hazel. SeventyEight have worked with artists like Loreen , whose hit single Euphoria they co-produced. Singer Kerli noted that she felt very comfortable in the studio with the two musicians, and referred to Halldin and Hazel as “songwriting soul mates” and added: “They're perfectionists and I've never felt more comfortable [writing] . [...] When we were in the studio together the energy was full of electricity. " [They are perfectionists and I've never felt so comfortable writing songs. When we were in the studio together, the energy was full of electricity.] The collaboration between the musicians resulted in songs like The Lucky Ones , which was released as the first single from Kerli's second EP Utopia . Originally, the previous singles Army Of Love and Zero Gravity should serve as the lead single, but Universal Motown Vice President Chris Anokute announced in August 2012 via Twitter that a song called The Lucky Ones would be released as the first single.

The song premiered on the Internet on October 26, 2012. Three days later it was published on all major download portals via Island Records.

In a live chat, Kerli spoke about the creation of the song. Her best friend was diagnosed with cancer. At the last moment before chemotherapy began, her boyfriend received the all-clear and was sent home. Kerli explained that she has always wanted to believe in miracles and that she was lucky enough to witness one and that she and her boyfriend had been given a second chance. Immediately afterwards, she started writing The Lucky Ones . She also said: “The message of the song is for us to never ever forget that we are the lucky ones. That fact that we get to sit here right now [...] and be healthy. It's definitely the most meaningful song I've ever written. " [The message of the song is that we should never forget how lucky you are. The fact that we are sitting here and being healthy. This is definitely the most meaningful song I've ever written.]

During the course of the song, the text passage “When your world is crumbling down / I can make it better. / When you're lost, need to be found, I will look forever - for you. " [When your world collapses, I'll be there for you. If you are lost and someone should find you, I'll look for you.] And the cry “We are the lucky ones!” [We are the ones who are so lucky.] Repeated.

Music video

The music video for The Lucky Ones premiered on December 5, 2012. Directors were Brian Ziff and Ethan Chancer.

The video was shot in Los Angeles and shows Kerli walking and dancing down the streets while singing the song. Three different stories play out between these scenes. The first is about a couple who quarrel in a nightclub, after which the woman leaves the club angrily. When she comes to the street, she is almost run over by a car, but is pulled back by her boyfriend at the last moment. The second scene shows a woman sitting by the window in her apartment and looking out with a sad look. Meanwhile, you can see cans of medicine on her bedside table, like a man lying in her bed. When she lies down next to him again, they both look at each other, and the man gently pulls the wig from her head and reveals her bald head. The third scene shows a young boy running away from home after his parents quarrel.

Charts

On December 8, 2012, The Lucky Ones debuted at # 41 on Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs , a weekly poll of the most popular sons in American nightclubs. On February 16, the song reached the top position, making it Kerli's second number one hit on said charts.
