Luniz (also Luniz ) is an American rap - duo from Oakland, California . The duo is formed by rappers Yukmouth and Numskull and was founded in 1993. With the hit I Got 5 on It from 1995, they gained international fame.

history

The band gave itself the name "The Luni Tunz" in 1993, which is a different spelling of the title of the famous cartoon series Looney Tunes . However, the name was shortened to "The Luniz" or "Luniz" before the debut album was released.

The Luniz released their debut album Operation Stackola in 1995 , which was released by Virgin and Noo Trybe. In 1995, the sound carrier was number 20 in the US album charts and number 23 in the German album charts. With the released single I Got 5 on It they achieved the greatest success in the band's history so far. The song reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks in the United States. In Germany, I Got 5 on It was represented in the German single charts for 29 weeks from October 1995 to April 1996. The highest ranking was position 2. The main melody and parts of the vocals are based on Why You Treat Me so Bad by the Club Nouveau group .

After Luniz received a platinum record for the album Operation Stackola , they were called to 2Pac's One-Nation project. However, an assassination attempt took place while it was being planned, and 2Pac died of the consequences a few days later. The second album Lunitik Muzik was released in 1997. The only released single was the piece Jus Mee and U . The Luniz reached position 34 on the Billboard 200 with their second studio album. The rap duo's last album was released in 2002 under the name Silver and Black . It features guest posts by artists such as Fat Joe , Dru Down and Treach from Naughty by Nature .

Subsequently, due to internal differences, the collaboration between the two band members was put on hold and Yukmouth began a solo career. His first album was released in 1998. Since 2017, however, the two have been making music together again under the old name "Luniz".
