The Gazette (Montreal)
The Montreal Gazette , also known as The Gazette , is the daily newspaper for the English-speaking minority in the province of Québec in Canada .
It was first published in 1778, then still in French under the name La Gazette, and was discontinued just a year later.
In 1785 it was reissued under the name La Gazette de Montréal and developed over the next few years from a French-English publication to a purely English-language newspaper.
Up until the second half of the 20th century, it competed with a total of three English-language newspapers. However, these have all been discontinued, so that the Montreal Gazette is now the only English-language daily newspaper in Québec. It is now in competition with three daily newspapers that appear exclusively in French.
It is published in Montréal with a circulation of approx. 450,000 copies.
