The Mouths of Madness is the second studio album by the US doom metal band Orchid . It was released on April 26, 2013 by Nuclear Blast .

Origin and style

The album was produced and mixed by vocalists Theo Mindell and Will Storkson. Storkson also played keyboard , synthesizer and percussion as an additional musician . The Mouths of Madness was made at Hyde St. Studios in San Francisco , Laughing Tiger Studios in San Rafael and Capricorn Studios in Novato , all in California . All the music comes from the band, the lyrics from Mindell. The artwork is also from Mindell. The style of the album was compared to Black Sabbath , but the band also allowed other influences, such as a harmonica use in Marching Dogs of War , which is similar to Roadhouse Blues from The Doors , or the piano- accompanied bar blues in Mountains of Steel , which has also been compared to Down .

After the band had only played as an opening act or with stylistically less suitable bands in the USA, they performed for the first time at a major concert at the Rock Hard Festival in May 2013 after a tour with Witchcraft .

reception

The album entered the German album charts at number 18. The album was named album of the month by Rock Hard magazine . Thomas Kupfer awarded 8.5 out of 10 points. He wrote that the band was not trying to copy the debut's recipe for success. The motto is "less Sabbath, more experiments", the band is doing "a hell of a lot right".
