The Mystery of the Mary Celeste (American title Phantom Ship ) is one of the early Hammer films with the production year 1935 . The main actor is Bela Lugosi . The plot is based on the legendary story of Mary Celeste . The ship was found floating in the sea off Portugal in 1872 without a crew . The film attempts a rather unspectacular clarification of the events surrounding the well-known ghost ship and manages without supernatural incidents.
action
In New York, Captain Briggs and his friend Captain Morehead visit young Sarah, with whom they are both in love. Sarah and Briggs reveal their marriage plans to Morehead, whereupon Morehead is furious with jealousy and swears vengeance on them. After the marriage, Sarah is supposed to accompany her husband on the Marie Celeste and Briggs starts looking for a crew. Among other things, he hires Anton Lorenzen.
The first accidents happen shortly after the start of the voyage, and over time one sailor after the other disappears inexplicably from the ship. It soon becomes clear that a murderer is up to mischief. But the assumption that Morehead smuggled a killer in revenge proves to be wrong. When only first mate Bilson and Anton Lorenzen are left, one learns that Lorenzen became “ shanghait ” years ago . Lorenzen shoots the mate, but is hit shortly afterwards by a transverse mast that is torn loose in the wind and falls overboard. Finally, the Dei Gratia of Captain Morehead finds Marie Celeste, who is drifting without a crew .
