The Oamaru Mail is a daily regional newspaper in New Zealand . Its catchment area is on the South Island in the northeastern part of the Otago region. The newspaper is based in Oamaru .

history

On April 22, 1876, the Evening Mail was founded in Oamaru and used politically against the abolition of the then provinces in New Zealand. The paper was positioned against the North Otago Times , a morning newspaper that dominated the newspaper market in northern Otago at the time and whose publisher was campaigning for the abolition of the provinces.

After the Evening Mail struggled with technical difficulties and the resolution of the provinces had been resolved, the paper was about to be liquidated in early 1877. At that time, the New Zealand newspaper maker and future politician George Jones , who had previously founded the Waikato Times and the Evening News , came to Oamaru , bought the Evening Mail , made it financially good and got on with the political attack on the former prime minister Frederick Whitaker very quickly a conflict with the government. During this time, Jones gave the paper a new name with Oamaru Mail , brought it to market every day from three o'clock in the afternoon, and continued to run the newspaper successfully. In 1909 Jones founded his own company for Oamaru Mail and bought the Southland News from the south of the country.

The Oamaru Mail remained until the 1970s owned by the Jones family and was then successively over the NZ News Limited and the family Wilson & Horton to the APN NZ Media , the Australian APN News & Media was one group that sells. In November 2011 the Oamaru Mail was changed to the tabloid format and the frequency of publication every five days. In 2013, the family-owned Mainland Media Ltd from Christchurch became interested in the paper and bought it, as well as the Christchurch Star and six other smaller local newspapers, from APN NZ Media .

On August 1, 2014, Oamaru Mail became the property of Allied Press Limited of Dunedin , which already publishes the Otago Daily Times and several small local newspapers in the Otago , Canterbury and Southland regions.
