The Other Side of Heaven is an American drama from 2001 . Directed by Mitch Davis , who also wrote the screenplay based on the autobiographical book In the Eye of the Storm by John H. Groberg .

action

The action takes place in the 1950s. John Groberg, who grew up in Idaho Falls, is scheduled to do missionary work in Tonga for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for three years . Before he left, he had some adventures and was arrested for a short time.

In Tonga, Groberg is deployed on a group of remote islands and works with the local Feki. A woman tries to seduce Groberg, who remains loyal to his friend Jean Sabin, who was left behind in the USA. A storm causes great damage and numerous people are killed. There is thirst and hunger; a clergyman from another church gives Groberg his supplies, explaining that he is old while the missionary is still young. The clergyman is found dead after the arrival of the supply ship and is buried with honors.

In the end, Groberg married his girlfriend after returning to the USA.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on April 12, 2002 that Christopher Gorham gave a "solid" account, but that the character he played did not have much depth. The film "Celebrate the tutelage of whites" ("a movie that so staunchly celebrates white paternalism").

Awards

The film received the Character and Morality in Entertainment Award in 2003 .

The film opened on December 14, 2001 in selected cinemas in the USA and grossed around 4.7 million US dollars there. It was screened on May 16, 2003 at the Cannes International Film Festival .
