The Riddle is the second studio album by the English musician Nik Kershaw . It was released in November 1984 and is assigned to synth pop and new wave , some songs also contain elements of pop rock .
Emergence
As with the debut album Human Racing , Kershaw, who wrote all the tracks himself, worked again with Peter Collins and recorded the album with him at Sarm East Studios. The album design comes from Iain McKell. The cover photo showing Kershaw turning his back on a dead tree on a beach was taken on Chesil Beach in Dorset , England . The Isle of Portland can be seen on the back of the album in the background.
Publication and reception
The Riddle was released through MCA Records in November 1984 . Around the same time, the title song was released as a single and became a European hit. The following two singles, Wide Boy and Don Quixote , were it in 1985 but unable to match, even though both singles it in the UK managed in the top ten. The album itself came in at number eight in the UK; in Germany it reached number twelve on the album charts. It reached number 23 in Switzerland .
The website Allmusic gave the album four and a half stars out of five in retrospect. Scott Bultman wrote the record "finally garnered some deserved attention. The rest is his unique style of well-crafted synth-pop." ("The album is finally getting some deserved attention. The rest is powerful, stylistically unique synth-pop.")
