The Rippingtons are an American fusion band that developed towards smooth jazz . The quintet was founded in 1986 by guitarist Russ Freeman in Los Angeles .
The band was initially an all-star ensemble that Freeman brought together to record the album Moonlighting . After this album was very successful commercially, Freeman stabilized the band. In the past the group has consisted of saxophonists like Eric Marienthal , Paul Taylor , Jeff Kashiwa , Brandon Fields , Dave Koz and Kenny G , keyboardists Gregg Karukas , Dave Kochanski , David Benoit , Tom McMorran and Mark Portmann, bassists Kim Stone and Steve Bailey and drummers Tony Morales , David Anderson and Dave Hooper . For the recordings, the quintet was reinforced by percussionists such as Scott Breadman, Ray Yslas and Steve Reid. The band has also worked with Sadao Watanabe on tours of Japan .
The album Black Diamond reached # 1 on Billboard . The title track of their album Let It Ripp also became a hit.
In recent years, the group has also picked up Latin influences, which can be heard on their album Wild Card , which includes guest musicians such as Willy Chirino , Chante Moore and Albita . Her album Modern Art was nominated in December 2009 for a Grammy in the category "Best Pop Instrumental Album".
