The Story of Thor (ス ト ー リ ー オ ブ ト ア ~ 光 を 継 ぐ 者 ~Sutōrī obu Toa ~ Hikari o Tsugu Mono ~ or Story of Thor: Hikari o Tsugu Mono ; published in North America as Beyond Oasis ) is an action adventure game with a strong action game influence , which was completed in 1994 by the Sega company for the Sega Mega Drive . In 2007 it was published as a Virtual Console title for the Wii . The game is part of the Mega Drive Classics for the Nintendo Switch .

In this game, the player controls Prince Ali, who accidentally comes across a magical bracelet and is asked by the latter to find the matching counterpart and its wearer and destroy it. The control of the game and the fights with the opponents takes place in real time, whereby a slightly shifted frontal plan view was chosen as the viewing angle. The focus of the game is on the clashes with different opponents, which often appear in groups (such as Streets of Rage ). There are only a small number of puzzles to be solved.

The confrontations with the opposing groups are implemented in a beat 'em up -like style. The prince uses his weapons for different attack variants, which the player can activate by operating the control pad and the control buttons in a certain order and rhythm. Almost two dozen different forms of attack are possible with this control. The main weapon of the actor is a dagger, but there are various power-ups in the form of weapon types, which, with a few, difficult-to-acquire exceptions, only last for a certain number of attacks.

In addition, one can fall back on magic, which is provided in the form of jinns . However, these must first be found before they can be used. Each genie allows three different spells, which can also be used to solve puzzles. A mini-game, also accessible through a genie, enables races to be carried out for a time.

successor

The Story of Thor 2 (ト ア ~ 精 霊 王 紀 伝 ~Toa / Thor ~ Seirei-Ō Kiden ~ , published in North America as The Legend of Oasis ), which was released in 1996 for the Sega, was actually the predecessor to this game, but only appeared afterwards Saturn was released.

The game content is basically identical, and the narrated background story only differs in the name and subtleties of the plot. The graphics and the scope of the game have been significantly improved, and the focus has shifted a little more to the puzzles, which have a lot to do with the new possibilities for interacting with the environment. Both the weapon selection and the number of collectible Djinns have been increased, the attack system has been simplified somewhat.
