With the addition of the band member George White ( saxophone ), the name was changed to The Tornadoes .

biography

The Tornadoes had their first instrumental surf hit in the USA in 1962 with Bustin Surfboards , released on Aertaun Records , making them the first surf rock band to broadcast radio all over the USA. (The song Bustin Surfboards starts with an ocean wave that can be heard throughout the song and gives the impression of being on the beach.) With a reverb effects device "make yourself", the classic Fender Reverb was still available at that time not, the Tornadoes managed to hit the later typical sound of the surf genre that was still budding up to then. Goldmine , "the record collector's bible", on the record: "'Bustin Surfboards' is the rarest of holy grails for hodaddies and surf bunnies alike ... surf music at its earliest and coolest." The Tornadoes stayed in the following years a popular band on the California surf scene.

The album of the same name Bustin Surfboards was released in 1963, but did not manage to follow up on the debut success. The song Shootin 'Beavers was banned from radio stations because of its suggestive title. After the success of the British band The Tornados with the single Telstar (first No. 1 hit by a British band in the USA), the band changed its name to The Hollywood Tornadoes at short notice .

After the initial successes with Bustin Surfboards , The Gremmie , Shootin 'Beavers and Moondawg , there were no more hits, although the band had released one of the most influential albums in surf rock . Between 1962 and 1964 the band played concerts with the Beach Boys , Jan and Dean and the Surfaris, among others .

At the end of the 1960s, the Tornadoes broke up and the band members devoted themselves to other careers. In 1993 Sundazed Records released the 1963 album on CD in New York . In the same year all founding members got together to give a big reunion concert in Huntington Beach with Dick Dale , Jan and Dean , the Surfaris and the Kingsmen .

With the success of Bustin 'Surfboards on the 1994 Pulp Fiction soundtrack and renewed interest in the band, the Tornadoes began performing regularly with the original line-up.

In 1998 the Tornadoes released the album Bustin Surfboards '98 on Garland Records . In 1999 they were inducted into the Surf Music Hall of Fame . To this day, four members of the 1960s cast, Gerald Sanders, Norm Sanders, Jesse Sanders and Leonard Delaney still play. George White, the saxophone player, left the band in 1996 and was replaced by Ernie Tavizon until 1999. Joel Willenbring ( The Lively Ones ) has been a member of the band since 1999 .

In 2005 the Tornadoes released the album Now and Then on Crossfire Publications .
