reception

Frank Albrecht wrote for Rock Hard that Slaughters "terrible contribution to the soundtrack" for "Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey" would have "foreshadowed something bad", but "the opener 'Reach For The Sky'" sweeps "all fears off the table". The band is “not effeminate”, the guitars are “fat, hard and loud, tralala choruses” are extremely rare. Instead, "earthy, riff-emphasized heavy rock with a certain portion of party feeling" dominates. He also gives "of course two wonderful ballads" that are "ideally suited for cozy hours for two". The “only problem with this disc” is “the excessively long playing time of 63 minutes”, which is responsible for one or the other “gap filler”. Otherwise tracks like 'Out For Love', the "atmospheric" 'Real Love', the "sing along" 'Do Ya Know' or "the all-important title track could absolutely convince". Albrecht complains about the lack of so-called “superhammers such as 'Up All Night' or 'Fly To The Angels,'” but notes that “The Wild Life” has “become a compact, honest album that really deserves its eight points " have.

The Wild Life was more commercially successful than the group's debut album: it debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the hit list for 23 weeks, reaching number 37 in Switzerland and number 64 in the UK . The single Real Love made it to number 69 on the US singles chart.
