Byron Katie (2006)

Byron Katie (Byron Kathleen Mitchell, born December 6, 1942 as Byron Kathleen Reid in Breckenridge , Texas ) is an American teacher, bestselling author , best known as the founder of The Work method .

Life

Katie grew up in Southern California . As a successful businesswoman and mother of three children, she later lived in Barstow , also in California.

From the mid-1970s she suffered from severe psychological problems ( alcoholism , depression , food addiction , nicotine and drug addiction, violence) and was in therapeutic treatment. Since 1986 she has developed the method The Work out of her own crisis , which she conveys on lecture and workshop trips in many countries.

Byron Katie is married to Stephen Mitchell, pastor, writer, and translator and lives in Ojai , California .

The work

The Work is a method that consists of four standard questions related to the belief ( Belief ) of the mentally sufferer. These are:

  1. Is that true?
  2. Can you know with absolute certainty that this is true?
  3. How do you react (what happens inside you) when you believe this thought?
  4. Who would you be without the thought

Byron Katie usually supports the third question with additional questions such as:

  • Describe the physical sensations that arise when you have this thought.
  • How do you treat yourself and other people when you have this thought?

The Work is not understood as a separate psychotherapy direction, but as a supplement to various psychotherapeutic methods.

The Work can be used independently of other methods (including for self-examination) - by any person, any age, any origin and any type of suffering or life story. It is used as a method for checking one's own thoughts and thoughts, and the (subjective) inner truth can be more clearly understood from simple questions. For Moritz Boerner , The Work shows parallels to rational-emotive behavioral therapy (see phase disputation).

Users of the method point to the simplicity of the method, critics criticize it and that apart from the questions mentioned above, no techniques are included. The psychologist Heike Dierbach also criticizes that the use of the method can lead to alienation from the environment if every statement and every feeling is questioned. Die Welt writes: "The Work" lures with the promise of salvation that all problems - including cancer and sexual abuse - will vanish into thin air if we just reprogram our thoughts. Although this has nothing to do with science, participants still receive the university certificate "Systemic Coach" from a Berlin private university. "It is a" teaching with sectarian approaches ".

The name "The Work" has been protected as a brand name in the USA since 2000 and in Germany since 2008. Byron Katie herself perceives the method as a discovery rather than an invention, so does not derive any copyright from it.
