From 1982 to 1995 Maria Mizzaro was able to pass on her professional experience in scientific illustration to zoology students as part of a teaching assignment at the University of Vienna. She was also interested in the historical development of zoology in Vienna.

Maria Mizzaro died in November 2009 in Vienna. The funeral took place on November 16, 2009 at Baumgartner Friedhof (group 26, number 793).
