The Young Generation Theater (tjg) is a theater for children and young people in Dresden . Like the Dresden State Operetta , it has been based in the former Mitte power station since December 2016 , which has been converted into a cultural site since 2014.

history

The first children's and youth theater in Dresden was opened in 1864 by Agnes Nesmüller, the wife of theater director Josef Ferdinand Nesmüller , on Landhausstrasse . It was probably one of the first theaters for children in the world. This experiment failed after about two years for financial reasons.

Today's theater was founded on October 15, 1949 under the name Theater Für Kinder, Dresden, Deutsche Volksbühne and with the play Tobias Ahoi! opened by Marie-Louise Kendzia on November 11, 1949. It initially was popularly variety on the Königsbrücker street in the New Town before it in the dance theater "Constantia" in Dresden-Cotta moved and opened on April 21, 1950 there. On March 9, 1950, the theater was renamed Theater of the Young Generation .

On April 26, 1976, a fire on the stage and the subsequent extinguishing work destroyed the auditorium and stage area of ​​the TJG. In the period up to December 1979 it was therefore used as a traveling theater .

Since the city ​​of Dresden's puppet theater was affiliated in 1997, the TJG has been Germany's largest children's and youth theater. In the 2014 calendar year, 93,000 spectators attended the performances of the Young Generation Theater with an occupancy rate of 87 percent. On December 14, 2016, the opening gala took place together with the Dresden State Operetta after the two theaters had moved to the former Kraftwerk Mitte between Wettiner Platz and Könneritzstrasse , which has been converted into a cultural site since 2014.

The TJG has three venues in the branches of drama, puppet theater and theater academy in Kraftwerk Mitte with the large stage with 350 seats, the small stage with 125 seats and the studio stage with up to 200 seats.
