history

In the 18th century the theater square was called Rossmarkt, after the construction of the Hauptwache (completed in 1768) and the Hôtel de Musique (construction period from 1767 to 1769), the square was also called Hauptwacheplatz and Komödienplatz. In 1803, Rossmarkt was still the official name. Later the square was also called the hotel square. The houses on the west side of the square were called Gerber- or Gerbernlaube after the old guild house in Ober-Gerwern . From 1862 to 1903, the Hôtel de Musique served as the city theater, which gave the square its current name in 1882. The tram island in the middle of the square was removed in 1967.
