Theater Is Evil is the third studio album by the American musician Amanda Palmer , which was released on September 7, 2012. It was funded with the help of the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and reached number 10 on the Billboard charts in the United States .

Emergence

Theater Is Evil was created without a label after Palmer separated from her previous label, Roadrunner Records , in a lawsuit . Instead, she asked for pre-financing of her album of US $ 100,000 on the crowdfunding platform. The album financing was accompanied by a promise to produce an art book, an exhibition of the works contained therein in Berlin, London and four other cities in the USA as well as a world tour. In fact, as of May 31, 2013, Palmer received a total of $ 1,192,793 from 24,883 backers. Of this sum, around $ 800,000 to $ 900,000 went into the production of the album.

The title of the album was co-determined by Palmer's fans. Originally the CD was supposed to be called Theater Is Evil after the US-American spelling , but after discussions and votes among its supporters it finally followed the British spelling.

For one week it was also number 3 in the alternative albums, number 7 in the download album and number 8 in the rock album and was represented in the independent charts for two weeks, at the top with number 2.

“What Palmer conjures up with 'Theater Is Evil' is a song panopticon with the highest entertainment value, in which pure anarchy reigns. 15 songs which, in their narrative effort, spin together to form an endless story and whose fluctuations in harmony are unpredictable like the whims of a wisp. "

- Erich Renz : laut.de

“'Theater is evil' is a pompous, massive package of glam rock, Brit-Pop and sweet smack. The name “Brecht's Punk Cabaret”, which Palmer came up with for her music, still fits like a bull's-eye. It is her third solo studio album and the most impressive and most sophisticated so far. "

- Margarete Stokowski : taz

Palmer received negative reviews when she was looking for guest musicians for the live tour, but only promised them free beer and no payment in return. She justified this with the fact that she had no financial reserves for payment. Ongoing protests eventually moved Palmer to retrospectively reward their guest musicians.
