John Parkinson
John Parkinson (* 1567 in Nottinghamshire ? † August 1650 in London ) was an English doctor and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " John Parkinson ".
Live and act
John Parkinson was the pharmacist of King James I. He lived on Ludgate Hill and owned a large plant garden in Long Acre on the outskirts of London .
When the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries was founded in December 1617 by order of James I , he was one of the founding members. From 1620 to 1621 he served the society as a warden . Parkinson was also one of the advisers of the Royal College of Physicians when their members compiled their Pharmacopoeia Londinensis (1618).
His first major work, Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris , appeared in 1629. It is divided into the areas of flower, vegetable and orchard. It describes over 1000 plants and about 800 also depicts them. King Charles I awarded him the title Botanicus Regius Primarius for his achievement .
In the Theatrum Botanicum of 1640 he describes the medicinal properties of around 3800 plants. Its representation is based on the botanical nomenclature developed by Caspar Bauhin in Pinax .
Parkinson died in the summer of 1650 and was buried in the graveyard of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church on August 6th .
Honor taxon
Charles Plumier named the genus Parkinsonia of the legume family (Fabaceae) in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name.
