Lake Tisza (Hungarian: Tisza-tó or Kiskörei-víztározó , " Kiskörer Reservoir ") is Hungary 's largest artificial lake.

Location and dates

The lake is located in the southeast of Heves county on the border with Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén , Hajdú-Bihar and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok counties . The reservoir was established in 1973 to regulate the Tisza - flood excavated. In the 1990s, the lake reached its final water level. With a length of 27 km it extends over 127 km². The average depth is 1.3 m. At the deepest point, the lake is 17 m deep. There are many islands in the lake with a total area of ​​43 km².

After the basin filled up, the lake mainly attracted Hungarian tourists as it offered a cheaper alternative to Lake Balaton . Campsites , hotels and swimming pools were built around the lake . Village tourism developed in the surrounding area . There is also a bird reserve there.

Lake Tisza is crossed by the Füzesabony - Debrecen railway line . On this route, regional trains run every two hours, stopping on both banks of the lake in Poroszló and Tiszafüred .
