Themisto (daughter of Hypseus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Themisto ( Greek  Θεμιστώ ) is a figure in Greek mythology .

She is the daughter of Lapith Hypseus and the third wife of the Boeotian king Athamas (after Nephele and Ino ). With him she has the sons Leukon , Erythrios , Schoineus and Ptoos . Hyginus names two other sons, Sphingios and Orchomenus , and names Themisto as the second wife of Athamas. She was ousted by Ino and therefore wanted to kill her son out of revenge. However, she accidentally kills her own son, who is wearing his half-brother's clothes that day, and commits suicide. Elsewhere, Hyginus tells the story again in a slightly different way, apparently as a reproduction of the lost tragedy Ino by Euripides : Athamas married Themisto in the belief that his former wife Ino had died. When he discovers that she is still alive, he brings her back to his palace, where he disguises her as a slave. When Themisto found out, she forged her plan of revenge.
