Theo Parrish (* 1972 in Washington, DC ) is an American house producer and DJ who lives and works in Detroit .

Life

Born in Washington DC, Parrish grew up in Chicago . He mentions the music of Miles Davis , Stevie Wonder , Jimi Hendrix , Nina Simone , George Gershwin and Bob Marley as musical influences . Chicago House , which has been popular since the mid-1980s, encouraged him to begin his own productions and work as a DJ in 1986. He graduated from the University of Kansas City with an art degree . In his thesis he dealt with sound sculptures . After moving to Michigan in 1994, he established close contacts with the Detroit techno scene through a job in a record distributor .

In addition to numerous solo releases and collaborations with befriended house producers such as Moodymann , Marcellus Pittman, Rick Wilhite and Omar S, he is the head of the sixteen-member musician collective The Rotating Assembly .

music

Theo Parrish's music is mostly assigned to deep house and contains strong influences from jazz , soul and funk . Many tracks are based on the principle of sampling old records, but also on the rhythms from drum computers - often programmed with a distinctive offbeat .

His first release, "Lake Shore Drive", appeared in 1995 as the B-side of the maxi single "Inspirations From A Small Black Church On The Eastside Of Detroit" by Moodymann on his label KDJ. Numerous releases followed on Peacefrog Records , Ubiquity Records and, above all, on Parrish's own label Sound Signature , founded in 1997 . Together with Moodymann and Rick Wilhite (later also with Marcellus Pittman) he released several records under the project name 3 Chairs since 1997 , including the album “Three Chairs 3” from 2004; under the project name TOM Project he worked with Omar S. and Marcellus Pittman.

The 2005 Carl Craig remix of his track “Falling Up”, which is considered one of the club hits of the year and featured in numerous DJ charts, attracted attention .
