Theo Schoenaker (born June 24, 1932 in Doetinchem , Netherlands ) is a Dutch speech therapist and individual psychologist.

Life

Theo Schoenaker first studied piano and oboe . He then completed commercial training and worked for several years as a foreign language correspondent.

At the beginning of the 1960s he trained as a speech therapist. He worked together with his wife Antonia (1930-1994), who was also a speech therapist, in private practice - especially with adults who stutter . This took place first in the Netherlands and later in Germany. He is the founder of individual psychological methods for the therapy of social disorders as well as training methods to promote and train the ability to encourage self and others.

Schoenaker now lives with his wife Julitta in Genemuiden in the Netherlands. He is still active as a lecturer, author, supervisor and individual psychological advisor.

Act

In Germany, through Erik Blumenthal , Schoenaker came into contact with Rudolf Dreikurs , a pupil of Alfred Adler , and learned from him for a few years. Schoenaker was closely associated with ICASSI (International Committee for Adlerian Summer Schools and Institutes) from 1969 to 1982 - as a team and as a speaker.

In 1973, Schoenaker opened the Rudolf Dreikurs Institute for Social Equality in Züntersbach . In 1998 it was renamed the Adler-Dreikurs-Institut . Also in 1973 he was awarded the Turmac Liemers Prize for Social Merit.

As a speech therapist, he developed new methods that led to a practically oriented concept in the treatment of adult people who stutter. He called it the "Doetinchemer Method". Through his encounter with Dreikurs and individual psychology , he further developed this method for individual psychological group therapy for stuttering adults. Schoenaker also applied this method to neurotic disorders and developed a preventive course program for more conscious lifestyle, the "Encouraging Training". In 1996, together with his wife Julitta, he founded a special concept of training to become an individual psychological consultant, the main feature of which is encouraging learning.

For his contributions to stuttering and individual psychology, Schoenaker was awarded the title "Kenan Distinguished Professor" in 2002 by Meredith College, Raleigh , North Carolina .

With the aim of making individual psychology understandable for laypeople and disseminating it, Schoenaker gave thematic lectures in Germany and the Netherlands, some of which were recorded and published. He is the author of numerous books. Together with his wife he founded the RDI publishing house. Many of his books were published here. His best-known book is “Mut tut gut”, which has also been available in English since 2010 with the title “Encouragement does good things happen”.
