The Albertina Modern ( spelling ALBERTINA MODERN ) is a museum for contemporary art that will open as the second location of the Vienna Albertina on March 12, 2020 in the Künstlerhaus Wien . With over 60,000 works by 5,000 artists, it is one of the major museums for contemporary art.

history

The entrepreneur Hans Peter Haselsteiner and the general director of the Albertina, Klaus Albrecht Schröder , set the common goal of preserving the Essl collection permanently and moving it from Lower Austria to the Austrian capital Vienna. Together with the Essl family, after merging the Essl Collection with the Albertina's contemporary art collections, they would found their own museum for modern art under the leadership of the Albertina. This project was supported from the beginning by the respective ministers of culture Josef Ostermayer , Thomas Drozda , Gernot Blümel and Alexander Schallenberg , who advocated the establishment of the second location of the Albertina.

The artist's house on Karlsplatz in Vienna , where Hans Peter Haselsteiner acquired the majority in 2016, was able to be won as the location for the museum . With the establishment of the Künstlerhaus Holding and Operating Company, the latter undertook to renovate the club's formerly splendid exhibition house and modernize it according to the museological specifications of the Albertina. This architectural masterpiece of historicism became the home of the museum on an area of over 2,000 m² on the ground floor and basement of the house. The upper floor is used by the Künstlerhaus Association , a society of visual artists in Austria.

collection

Since 2000 the Albertina has been renovated and the exhibition area enlarged. The modern art collection was also continuously expanded. With its holdings of contemporary art, the Albertina Modern's collection, with a total of 60,000 works of drawings, watercolors, prints and photographs, is one of the largest collections of contemporary art. The exhibits for the new museum come on the one hand from the holdings of the Albertina, but on the other hand also from Haselsteiner himself. The patron had acquired 60 percent of the Essl collection after the owners and married couple had got into economic crisis. The Essl couple donated the remaining 40 percent to the Albertina so that it can now use the entire collection.

One focus is the collections of Austrian art, but there are also extensive blocks of works by the German artists Georg Baselitz , Anselm Kiefer , Markus Lüpertz , Jörg Immendorff and Günther Förg . Among the Americans are groups of works by Andy Warhol , Alex Katz , Eric Fischl , Robert Longo , Cindy Sherman , Sherrie Levine , Ross Bleckner and Michael Heizer .
