Theoderata

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theoderata ( French Théodrate or Théodérade ; * around 868 , † after 903 ) was queen of the West Franconia from 888 to 898 through her marriage to Odo of Paris ( French Eudes ) .

Life

According to the European family tables , Theoderata was born around the year 868 as the daughter of Count Aleram (Aleran) of Troyes . Christian Settipani points out, however, that this theory is completely unsubstantiated, so that there are no reliable findings about the origin of Theoderata.

At the age of 16 she married Count Odo of Paris , who often left her and their children alone in Paris because of his military activities against the Normans' invasions into western France - even when the city was besieged .

A few years after the wedding, her husband was crowned King of West Franconia in February 888 by ignoring the legitimate heir to the throne, Karl , son from the second marriage of Ludwig II , whose mother was on trial for adultery. It was only after Odo's death in 898 that Karl was named King Karl III. crowned while Odo's widow was banished from court. She then went into a second marriage with Otto, a member of the Lotharing nobility , and was probably his second wife. Theoderata died, forgotten by her contemporaries, after the year 903.

progeny

From the marriage of Theoderatas and Odos came three sons, who were not recognized as heir to the throne:

  • Raul, King of Aquitaine (* around 882, † after 898)
  • Arnulf (* around 885; † 898)
  • Wido (Guy)

Arnulf is only mentioned in the chronicle of Ademar von Chabannes , while Wido is listed as a witness in a document dated August 28, 903. According to Christian Settipani , however, the certificate is a forgery.
