Former police barracks

The former police barracks Theodor-Heuss-Straße 149 is in Mönchengladbach ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) in the Dahl district .

The building was built in 1938/39 and entered into the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach on August 9, 1988 under No. T 008a .

use

The planning of the building began during the time of the city of Gladbach-Rheydt . The barracks should be in the center of the new city, but it was only completed and occupied in 1939 after the cities of Rheydt and Munich-Gladbach were separated again in 1933 . From 1946 until its move to Krefelder Straße in July 2018, the building was the seat of the Mönchengladbach police headquarters . It was then used by the Rheydt police station during the renovation of their building on Vierhausstraße until the beginning of November 2019. When the police station returned to Vierhausstrasse, the use of the building on Theodor-Heuss-Strasse 149 by the police ended. For the future use of the land and the buildings owned by the construction and real estate operations North Rhine-Westphalia are that are Niederrhein University and a university close Innovation Center in the discussion.

architecture

The individual buildings of the former police barracks were built in 1938/39. The two-storey administration building and the other single-storey buildings are provided with slate-covered hip roofs and made of brick. A connecting covered gate system to the recessed workshop area opens up the entire area. A motor vehicle hall is assigned to it in parallel. A detention center delimits the courtyard to the west. The building group of gymnastics and riding arena and connecting ancillary buildings, located in the north in a comb-like manner towards the sports field , forms a strongly accentuated conclusion.

Undisturbed in its substance, this complex is a very vivid example of a police barracks from the late 1930s in terms of its function and meaning.
