Theodor Burkali (born September 28, 1975 in Győr ) is a Hungarian composer and clarinetist .

education

Theodor Burkali studied composition and clarinet at the Győr Conservatory from 1990 to 1994 and at the " Franz Liszt " Music Academy in Budapest , where he graduated with an artist diploma in 1999 with distinction. From 1997 to 2001 he studied clarinet with Emil Rieder at the Mozarteum in Salzburg , where he obtained his doctorate in 2005 with the dissertation "New sound effects and playing techniques on the clarinet". In 2001 he was at the "Acadédemie de musique de Xxéme siécle" in Paris , where he worked with the " Ensemble intercontemporain ". He completed masterclasses for clarinet with Kálmán Berkes, Francois Benda, Sabine Meyer and Michel Portal, for saxophone with Jean-Pierre Baraglioli, Michiel Oldenkamp and Eugene Rousseau, for composition with Franco Donatoni and Gija Kantscheli .

Artistic activities

Theodor Burkali works as a musician for the Salzburg Festival but also for ARBOS - Society for Music and Theater , he is a member of the "Austrian Ensemble for New Music" in Salzburg and founder and member of the ensemble "ChronoLudens" and the "Trio Resonanz". As a composer he works for the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Queens Hall in Edinburgh, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Krakow and ARBOS - Society for Music and Theater. He also received composition commissions from these institutions.

Burkali teaches clarinet and saxophone at the music school in Trostberg in Bavaria and lives and works in Salzburg.

Awards

Theodor Burkali has been awarded several prizes for his artistic work. As a musician, he received several awards in national music competitions in Hungary from 1988 to 1994. In 1996 he received third prize at the international "Jeunesse Musicales" competition in Bucharest, Romania and first prize at the " Yamaha Music Foundation " competition, and in 2001 in Vienna he received the Federal Ministry of Education, Art and Culture Prize . As a member of the Austrian Ensemble for New Music, he also received the "Prize of German Record Critics". As a composer he received the special prize of the publishing house " Boosey & Hawkes " in 1998 , and in 2000 the prize of the "Yamaha Music Foundation" for his composition "Capriccio". In 2002 he received the sponsorship award of the " Theodor-Körner-Stiftung ", in 2004 the annual grant of the Salzburg state government and the third prize of the " Franz Josef Reinl -Stiftung".
