Theodor Curtius (politician)
Theodor Curtius (born March 6, 1811 in Lübeck , † November 25, 1889 ibid) was a German lawyer and notary , later senator and mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.
Life
Theodor Curtius was born as one of several sons of the Lübeck municipal lawyer Carl Georg Curtius and attended the Katharineum in Lübeck until Michaelis in 1829, before studying law in Göttingen. In Göttingen he joined the Corps Hanseatia . After completing his law studies in Göttingen and obtaining a doctorate as a Dr. jur. C. settled in Heidelberg (1833) as a lawyer and notary in his hometown. His first marriage was Sophie Charlotte Petit (1812–1841), a sister of the Lübeck merchant Charles Petit , and his second marriage was Dina Cäcilie von Schlözer (1820–1904), daughter of the Lübeck merchant Karl von Schlözer and sister of Kurd von Schlözer . The second marriage resulted in 2 daughters and 4 sons, including his biographer, the lawyer Paul Curtius (1849–1932).
Political activity in Lübeck
His political career began in 1846 with his election to the Lübeck Senate. C. found his political focus in diplomacy and the Hanseatic city's external relations. So he immediately made contact with Prussia and Austria in order to secure their support against the occupation intentions of Denmark. From 1848 C. worked in countless commissions in his hometown and was instrumental in many reforms. (e.g. postal services). In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament . From September 12 to 13, 1868 , King Wilhelm I of Prussia stayed with him on his first journey through Schleswig-Holstein after the annexation of the duchies. So it is not surprising that he was appointed mayor several times (1869/70, 1873/74, 1877/78). The last appointment (1880) he had to reject for health reasons and finally withdrew from politics in 1885.
Fehling remarked about him:
“For almost 40 years he did an excellent job in the Senate. The management of foreign affairs lay in his skillful and happy hand for a generation. "
Theodor Curtius was awarded the Bene Merenti commemorative coin by his hometown .
