Theodor Gottlieb

Theodor Gottlieb (born April 8, 1860 in Brno , † January 15, 1929 in Vienna ) was an Austrian librarian and classical philologist.

Life

Gottlieb, who came from a Jewish family, studied in Vienna, Berlin and Leipzig ( doctorate in 1887). After completing his library training in London and Rome , in 1890 he became a librarian in what was then the Imperial Royal Court Library of Vienna (now the Austrian National Library ). Most recently he held the office of court counselor .

In particular, he researched the history of medieval libraries - for example, he edited the first volume of the medieval library catalogs in Austria in 1915 - and historical book covers. According to Ferdinand Geldner, he is considered to be the “founder of modern, exact binding research”.
