Theodor Hierneis

Theodor Hierneis (born October 4, 1868 in Munich , † April 19, 1953 ) was a cook at the court of King Ludwig II of Bavaria . He became known for his memoirs about the time at court, which were filmed in 1972 with Walter Sedlmayr in the leading role in Theodor Hierneis or How to become a former court cook .

biography

He was the son of Otto Hierneis and Anna geb. Thomass. His father was a master sack maker and glove maker, and the shop and house was on Munich's Marienplatz . The corner house on Marienplatz was owned by his mother, where the Carl Thomass jewelry store founded by his uncle is still located today .

On November 1, 1882, at the age of 14, he entered the court of King Ludwig II, where he began his apprenticeship as a kitchen boy in the court kitchen. From 1884 to 1886 he was the court cook of King Ludwig II. Hierneis wrote the daily menu for the king. After his death he became the court cook of Prince Regent Luitpold from 1886 to 1890 . In 1890 he moved to Berlin, where he worked as a volunteer in the court kitchen of Kaiser Wilhelm II and then became court chef .

In 1896 he married Eleonore Roderer († 1951), who gave birth to son Theo and daughters Berta and Josefine between 1897 and 1901. In 1908 his youngest daughter Ida was born.

In 1901 Hierneis went into business for himself through his savings and opened a delicatessen shop with a wine shop "Feine Kost" at Neuhauserstrasse 7 in Munich. He had aristocratic customers and was ultimately appointed " Royal Bavarian Court Supplier ". In 1906 he founded a branch in Starnberg to supply Berg Castle . His company survived the turmoil of the First World War . From 1921 to 1929 he was an elected member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Munich. In 1929 his delicatessen store moved to Herzogspitalstrasse 5. In 1936 he began to write down his memories from the time at the court of King Ludwig II. He published them himself in 1940 as a paperback with the title From my apprenticeship in the court kitchen of King Ludwig II Bavaria .

After the death of his wife Eleonore, he handed over the management of the delicatessen shop to his daughter Ida in 1952. In 1953 his book with the title The King Dines: Memories from the Court Kitchen of King Ludwig II was published by Heimeran Verlag . His memoirs give deep and very personal insights into the life of the king.
