Theodor Kerschner

Theodor Kerschner (born June 30, 1885 in Urfahr ; † April 16, 1971 there ) was an Austrian zoologist and museum director.

Life

Theodor Kerschner graduated from secondary school in Linz and studied zoology at the University of Graz from 1904 to 1910 . In 1913 he became a mandate , in 1914 research assistant and head of the biological department at the Francisco-Carolinum . After serving in the First World War, he returned to the museum in 1918. From 1926 to 1941 he was the state commissioner for nature conservation in Upper Austria.

From 1937 to 1945 Kerschner was director of the Upper Austrian State Museum . From 1939 to 1945 he was councilor of the city of Linz. In 1945 he was deposed by the American occupation forces and interned for a short time .

Theodor Kerschner drafted the first Upper Austrian Nature Conservation Act (Act of November 27, 1927, LGuVBl 6/1928). In 1939 he became the regional officer for nature conservation at the Reichsstatthalter for Upper Danube, and from 1941 to 1942 he was the technical department head of the higher nature conservation authority.

Around 1950, Kerschner was one of the first conservationists to try unsuccessfully to protect the owl deer and to create a reserve between Linz and Enns.

Kerschner was the last chairman of the Association for Natural History in Upper Austria, which founded the Botanical Garden of the City of Linz , and handed it over to the City of Linz. He was a functionary of several cultural associations and co-developer of the Austrian Nature Conservation Union .
