Theodor Liebertz (born November 20, 1869 in Düren , Westphalia ; died February 7, 1959 in Wallerfangen ) was a German elementary school teacher and local researcher. He comes from a family with 14 children, many of his siblings also took up the profession of teacher. He was married to Marie Donie from Wallerfangen on May 6, 1905 and had three children. He received his training as a primary school teacher at the teachers' college in Prüm. From May 16, 1891, he was a teacher in Wallerfangen, and from 1941, reactivated from his retirement, he was vice rector . Liebertz is buried at the foot of the Limberg .

A life dedicated to research

Theodor Liebertz devoted almost his entire life to local research, he was a passionate collector and keeper of archives, artefacts and other documents from early geological history ( shell limestone , azurite deposits ), prehistory and early history ( Celts , Romans ) and the Middle Ages ( Merovingians , Franconia , Lorraine ) up to the age of the beginning industrialization ( Wallerfanger stoneware factory ). In addition, the very versatile and ambitious scholar dealt with dialect and languages, the guild system, sacred history; but also with art and music. According to his wishes, his correspondingly extensive fund should always serve as the basis for a national museum of local history. Unfortunately, not all of the pieces have been preserved after his death, but most of them are still exhibited and archived in the Wallerfangen Historical Museum .

In the meantime, Liebertz completed several military exercises and was finally promoted to sergeant in the Landwehr . During the First World War he first took part in Belgium as a supply troop leader, then (from June 1915 to July 1916), also in the stage , in the Russian campaign. After his service, Liebertz resumed his profession as a teacher in Wallerfangen. In the course of his research he wrote over 90 scientific and cultural articles and reports on the whole range of topics.

On August 10, 1953, his book Wallerfangen und seine Geschichte was published .

On November 22, 2019, a commemorative publication was published by the Association for Local Research in Wallerfangen eV on his 150th birthday .

He is an honorary citizen of the Wallerfangen community.
