from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodor Wottitz (born March 31, 1875 in Vienna ; † March 11, 1937 there ) was an Austrian composer, conductor and lyricist of numerous Viennese songs.

Life

Theodor Wottitz was originally supposed to work in the leather industry. However, he felt drawn to serious music, received his training at the Vienna Music Academy, earned his living as a pianist and solo entertainer, and worked as a military conductor during the First World War . He composed countless Viennese songs, marches and overtures and arranged songs for orchestra. Wottitz was musical director in the horticultural variety theater and in the Budapest Orpheum (1912–1914). In 1938 his printed sheet music was removed from music stores because of his Jewish origins.

Grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery

The City of Vienna dedicated an honorary grave to Theodor Wottitz at the Vienna Central Cemetery because of his services to the Wienerlied (grave: Group 33 E, Row 16, No. 12).
