Theodoro Henrique Maurer

Theodoro Henrique Maurer (born May 13, 1906 in Cosmópolis , São Paulo (federal state) , † 1979 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian Romanist and Lusitanist of Swiss descent.

life and work

Maurer's parents emigrated from Zurich to Brazil in 1898 , but then went temporarily to the United States, so that he grew up there until 1911, later in Sumaré . He studied at the seminary of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil and from 1930 taught English and Latin in Franca and São Paulo, then exegesis and biblical archeology at the Theological Faculty of the Presbyterians. From 1938 to 1940 he studied Romance Philology at the University of São Paulo , taught there and received his doctorate in 1944 with the thesis A morfologia ea sintaxe do genitivo latino. Estudo historic (São Paulo 1948). From 1945 to 1946 he studied with a Rockefeller Scholarship at Yale University and then taught again in São Paulo. In 1951 he completed his habilitation there with the thesis O Unidade da România ocidental (São Paulo 1951) and was professor of Romance Philology there from 1952 until his retirement in 1973.
